What is kickboxing?
Kickboxing is a sport known throughout the world for its athletes being tough and extremely well conditioned. With the hand techniques taken from boxing, and the leg / foot techniques from karate, kickboxing has grown in popularity since its start in the 1970’s. Commonly misunderstood, kickboxing is a sport with a great deal to offer athletes of all ages. Discipline, Perseverence, hand / eye coordination, as well as foot / eye coordination is essential for these athletes. The dexterity required to properly execute kicks and punches in fluid combinations at the right time with the right distance is much more difficult than meets the eye.
Kickboxing put in simpler terms is a physical activity involving two individuals engaged in a strategic and physical game of kicks and punches involving protected areas of their hands and feet, in which each athlete attempts to outscore the opposing athlete by using offensive and defensive moves according to established rules and regulations.
There are 3 main types of kickboxing styles at Family Martial Arts. One is Semi Contact Kickboxing, two is Light Contact Kickboxing and of course Full Conatact Kickboxing, only of which two are taught
Semi Contact Kickboxing (point sparring) is popular throughout the world for its fast paced action. These athletes are must have explosive speed, be very athletic, and many other attributes to be successful. Proper fighting distance and using critical timing to execute kicks and punches to score points.
Light Contact Kickboxing (or continuous) sparring is sparring continuously for the extent of the round in an attempt to outscore your opponent. Points are scored in a similar way to point sparring, at the end of each round or bout the judges then tabulate which competitor has ‘scored more’ than the other. This type of sparring requires a high level of conditioning, competitors must be good technically and in good shape.
In Full Contact Kickboxing, the goal is also to outscore your opponent. Fewer techniques tend to be thrown but the ones that are, are of a higher skill level. It takes a higher degree of focus and discipline to participate in.
